Miao, Stewart receive James Thompson Student Award
Yinsen Miao and Jonathan Stewart have received the inaugural James Thompson Student Award from Rice University's Department of Statistics.
The student winners were recognized at the department's first lunch of the new fall semester. They will also receive $1,000 as part of the award.
The award is part of the recently established James R. Thompson Memorial Fund, which honors the life of the founding chair of the Department of Statistics in 1987. Thompson joined the Rice faculty in 1970, as a member of the Mathematical Sciences Department in the School of Natural Sciences.
Thompson retired from Rice in 2016, after 46 years as a member of the faculty. He died on Dec. 4 2017, at age 79. To honor his life and contributions, the Department of Statistics established an endowed fund in 2018, through the generous contributions of family, friends and colleagues.
